Vancouver.The Year of The Wolf

I offer you a debut; the seed of a progressive Vancouver blues band. Kyle Vaughan and Chad Gilmour, now based on the Westcoast, but adopted sons of Ottawa, laid the first milestone in what promises to be a career of many – with a maiden performance at Gastowns Guilt & Co last week. They were slotted during a weekly burlesque showcase at the downtown hotspot, but drew a dedicated crowd of listeners. It may have only been a glimpse, but it was enough to get good sense of the duo’s deep well of modern guitar wickedness. A band with razor sharp expression, airy, soulful vocals, and that’s dedicated to creative songwriting… It’s about time.

We are due to be blessed with yet another Southern Californian major – none other than the experimental, vocal heavy and rock hymnal Delta Spirit, appearing unfortunately at the constantly tech-troubled Electric Owl on May 6th. They will be playing here in support of their latest release, but they do have quite a bit of material to draw from, and it would be a shame if they didn’t – As they are band with commendable variety. Classic blues, northern soul, pure rock and roll or instrumental magicians – whatever you call their music, they do it well. Hope to see you at the show, heres is one off their EP Ode to Sunshine, and the hit of their 3rd full length, and self-titled Delta Spirit.

Remember, May 6th @ The Electric Owl
Tickets $15 from Northern Tickets

Los Angeles.Max and the Moon

2nd of the list of LA bands that are really cool right now, Max and the Moon, who just released a really tight 4-track on bandcamp last month The Way I See. This music is a good fit for everyone, sound vocals, urban rhythm elements combined with some keyboard and vocal effects… and they have solid guitar melodies to boot. These catchy song makers are only about a year old, spawning out of the Chino Hills just outside of Los Angeles. This group is a pretty perfect entity to describe the mood of music out of Southern California right now, situated in this indie rock-instrumental/electronic and vocal harmony heavy genre that has been growing out of the area in the recent past (Local Natives, Ok Go, Foster the People). Regardless, I am keeping my ear to our sunny southern neighbour this summer, and I have little doubt that Max and the Moon will follow in the same successful footsteps as their counterparts. Enjoy.

Los Angeles.The Lovely Bad Things

Fun, full of life and edgy LA based independent: “The Lovely Bad Things” are at that point in a modern bands career where they are finally getting a little due attention. They joined a powerful contingent of LA artists that rushed Austin in March (Including Pangea, Vanaprasta, Delta Spirit, Dead Sara) for SxSW, helping spread their call beyond LA county. The Lovely Bad Things create a deliberately simple, catchy indie rock straight out of the 1980′s. It comes over with that spirit of the rebellious that spawns from the punk rock scene, and you can hear that influence. Think of the surfy, western punk rock riffs that defined the Dead Kennedys. For me, I picture some car chase scene from a Tarantino movie – whatever connects you to the music is just fine, don’t be shy, here are 2 tracks from their EP New Ghost, Old Wave.
